Kaum ein Motorrad steht weltweit so für kompromisslose Sportlichkeit wie die Produkte der italienischen Firma Ducati. Nach bescheidenen Anfängen mit Fahrradhilfsmotoren wurden schon in den 1950er Jahren ganze Motorräder entwickelt und gebaut. Besondere technische Lösungen und ein konsequenter Leichtbau verhalfen den meist rot lackierten Motorrädern bald zu internationalem Renommee. Was sich am Wochenende auf den Rennstrecken bewährte, das konnte in der Woche darauf beim Motorradhändler in ähnlicher Form gekauft werden. Die ausgestellte Maschine vom Typ 996R war seinerzeit das Topmodell der Supersport-Serie von Ducati. Für stolze 52.000 Mark bekam der exklusive Kundenkreis eine Rennmaschine mit Straßenzulassung.

After modest beginnings with auxiliary engines for bicycles, entire motorcycles were developed and built already since the 1950s. Soon special technical solutions and consistent lightweight construction helped these mostly red-painted motorcycles achieve international reputation. What proved successful on the racetracks at the weekend could be purchased in a similar form at motorcycle dealers the following week. The 996R, which is displayed, was the top model in Ducati’s Supersport series at the time. For a stiff 52,000 German marks this exclusive circle of customers got a road-legal racing machine.
